Reducing criminal recidivism and helping at risk individuals across the region has been given a significant boost today with increased funding for ‘Safe Spaces’ in Kalgoorlie.
The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, today announced nearly $850,000 of funding for the WA PCYC to continue to deliver the Kalgoorlie PCYC Safe Space project.
The project aims to divert existing offenders and those at risk of offending from contact with the criminal justice system.
This funding is part of the Coalition Government’s $5 billion Indigenous Advancement Strategy (IAS).
Minister Scullion said that the program has shown great initial success and has already been delivering results for the community.
“The Kalgoorlie PCYC Safe Space project has seen the increasing engagement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth with a regular five day a week attendance of 30 to 50 young people per session” Minister Scullion said.
“The program helps young people address barriers to wellbeing, drug and alcohol use, impact of forced removal practices and family violence.
The Federal Coalition Government is committed to ensuring that all services supporting Kalgoorlie youth are well coordinated and locally driven.
Member for O'Connor, Rick Wilson MP said the project would help young people make the right choices in their lives, making the whole community safer.
“This funding means more people on the ground to help and protect those most at risk in our community,” Mr Wilson said.
“With this funding, the WA PCYC will be able to expand and employ four staff members, including one full time Case Manager, two part time Youth Workers and one part time Trainee Youth Worker.”
