Local freight operators benefit from smoother curves
Freight operators across the Albany region are set to benefit from the $11 million Albany Lake Grace Road project – better known as Amelup Curves – with construction to start in coming weeks.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester visited Albany Freight Lines in Walmsley to see how the project will benefit road freight businesses throughout the region.
“This $11 million upgrade is part of the $55.25 million Regional Road Safety Package recently announced in partnership with the Western Australian State Government,” Mr Chester said.
“We are committed to better, safer roads to reduce the number of crashes leading to deaths and serious injuries. The project will upgrade dangerous curves, intersections and bridges, and keep the road reliably open during flooding events.
“Building safer roads will improve safety and freight efficiency and will be a boon for local businesses like Albany Freight Lines, which depend on high-quality road infrastructure to operate efficiently and profitably.”
Federal Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson said Albany Lake Grace Road was an important route for a range of regional traffic.
“This is a critical route for the grain and livestock industries, linking the Wheatbelt to Albany Regional Centre, and to key tourist attractions such as the Stirling and Porongorup Ranges for regional visitors,” Mr Wilson said.
“There are currently two floodways through this section, which close the road during storm events, causing significant disruption to ever-increasing local transport needs.
“The project will include realigning and widening 4.5 kilometres of Chester Pass Road, upgrading the Sandalwood Road and Routs Road intersections, and new bridges over Martaquin Creek and Ongarup Creek.”
The Regional Road Safety Package is part of the $2.3 billion road and rail infrastructure package to improve safety, ease congestion and keep the economy moving in Western Australia.
The Australian Government has committed $8.8 million and the Western Australia government $2.2 million to the Albany Lake Grace Road - Amelup curves project.
