Federal Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson has been promoted with a new important role in Parliament.

“It was an honour when Speaker of the House Tony Smith asked me to be one of the acting deputy speakers of the Federation Chamber.

“I’ve already completed my first duties during the last sitting week and enjoyed the new challenge.

“A lot of business is undertaken in Parliament so its important time is managed efficiently, that’s why we have the Federation Chamber and why the role of chair is so important.

“Another important task as deputy speaker is ensuring the rules of Parliament are followed.”

The Federation Chamber operates in parallel with the main House to allow two streams of government business to be debated concurrently. Business in the Federation Chamber is publically available for viewing on the Australian Parliament House website.

I was inspired to run for Parliament following my involvement in a decade-long campaign to deregulate the wheat industry, which brought about the end of the Australian Wheat Board’s monopoly.

“I stand proudly for the Liberal philosophy of free markets, vigorous competition, small government and individual responsibility. These are the principles that guide me in my life and in this place. My track record in public life shows clearly that I am prepared to stand up for those principles.”

“To the electors of O'Connor, I reiterate the commitment that I have made to work tirelessly on your behalf, to always be frank and honest about the challenges we face, and to work cooperatively and collaboratively to improve the lives of the people who live in the greatest part of the greatest nation on earth”
