Sharing ideas, encouraging innovation and realising the potential of WA

Federal Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson today welcomed the announcement of nationwide community consultations which will inform the Australian Government’s new regional development policy.

Mr Wilson said regional Australia is at the forefront of Australia’s productivity and prosperity.

“Our region in particular produces and exports some of the world’s best minerals, wine, wool and seafood, among other things,” Mr Wilson said.

“I am looking forward to discussing important regional issues in the electorate with the Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack when he visits Albany and Kalgoorlie in February.

“I believe this regional development policy process will provide many opportunities to showcase our area, and to help shape new ideas to further grow our economy and create local jobs.”

Assistant Minister McCormack is leading the policy development process and said he welcomed input into this policy from all regions of Australia.

“The Government is constantly listening and seeking feedback from regional Australia so that we can work together to make our regions even stronger,” Mr McCormack said.

“This policy process will add to our ongoing discussions by specifically looking at individual government programmes and hearing new ideas on how we can boost regional economies and create local employment opportunities.

“There has been a significant focus on the Government’s cities agenda to drive innovation and boost productivity. Equally, regional Australia will be a major focus of the Government’s agenda in 2016.

“I encourage all interested parties to get involved by contacting their local Regional Development Australia committees, local MPs or my Department.”

MEET RICK

I was inspired to run for Parliament following my involvement in a decade-long campaign to deregulate the wheat industry, which brought about the end of the Australia Wheat Board’s monopoly.

“I stand proudly for the Liberal philosophy of free markets, vigorous competition, small government and individual responsibility. These are the principles that guide me in my life and in this place. My track record in public life shows clearly that I am prepared to stand up for those principles.”

“To the electors of O'Connor, I reiterate the commitment that I have made to work tirelessly on your behalf, to always be frank and honest about the challenges we face, and to work cooperatively and collaboratively to improve the lives of the people who live in the greatest part of the greatest nation on earth”
